Chapter 9

He should have killed the guy.

Or not. He gave his word, and his word is his bond.

His bond is dumb sometimes.

“Matteo?” Renee shifts in the passenger seat. “You sure you don’t want to talk about it?”

“Yep.” They’ve been on the road for an hour. Once he set Dillhole free, they had to get gone. No sense sticking around so some dipshit could bash rocks through their windows. It’s shatterproof glass, but still. He can’t risk Dillhole identifying them.

She’s watching, so he tries to stop clenching his jaw. He owes her an explanation. Words or feelings or something besides stony silence. “That shit makes my blood boil.”

As sharing goes, it’s not great.

But it’s a start. Her face softens in the corner of his eye.

“Men who hit women?” She pauses, picking her words with care. “That’s true.” She’s not sure how to ask this. “I couldn’t help noticing you seemed particularly…passionate.”

She lets that hang between them. An opening for him to fill. He’s not sure what to say. “It’s not my story to tell.” That’s good. Keeps his promise of not lying. It’s honest, but not the whole truth. “It’s personal though. Yeah.”

“Matteo. I know.” She touches his arm across the console. “Nicole told me her history the day we toured her daycare.”

He nearly drives off the road. “She talked about the asshole who hit her?”

“Yes.” She clears her throat. “Your sister’s a little more open than you.”

“Shit.” He never thought she’d talk about it. If it were him, he’d take that to the grave.

“She explained how she started her daycare to help people escaping bad situations. Your sister got out, but it’s harder for some victims.” Another pause as she draws her hand back. “For what it’s worth, I’m glad you stood up to him. Dilldum, I mean.”

“Dilldum?”

She makes a face. “Sorry, Dillon.”

“No, I like Dilldum. It’s better than what I’ve been calling him.”

“Which is?”

“Dillhole.” That makes him smile. “That’s actually what Jen called Nic’s ex.”

“Was his name Dillon?”

“Nah, Clint.” He taps the steering wheel. “I looked dillhole up on Urban Dictionary.” He clears his throat and quotes from memory. “‘A dumbass. See also dumbfuck, fuckhead, asswipe.’”

“Goodness.” She laughs. “Fitting.”

They’re getting off track here. He glances over to gauge her mood. God, she’s beautiful. She’s back in yoga pants, gray ones this time. They hug her perfect legs, while her white tank makes him wonder what’s underneath. That pink bra he saw earlier?

And now he’s hard. He drags his eyes away, so he doesn’t steer off the road.

“It was a brave thing to do.” She crosses her legs, and he’s distracted again. “Maybe not the right approach for everyone, but for a guy like you—”

“A guy like me?”

She smiles. “A guy who’s big and burly and terrifying and not afraid of anything.”

He likes the “big” and “burly,” so it takes a sec to catch the other stuff. “You think I’m terrifying?” He’d die before making her afraid.

“I’m not scared of you, no.” A pause. “I’m scared for anyone who’d double-cross you.
